Interview with Francesco Cusumano:
FG: How did you get
started doing what you do?
Francesco: For case, during the summer vacations in
Italy, at the age of 14 years I had the opportunity to help a framer in my
country, where there were two painters from Naples, who painted for him.
I
spent hours admiring them and all this fascinated me. That's when I realized
that this was the path I had to take.
FG: How would you
describe your art today?
Francesco: I
compare painting to a journey. Every journey has an itinerary to reach its
destination, but sometimes during the journey there are obstacles. One should
know how to overcome these obstacles.
It's
exactly the same during the process of painting a picture. You need to improvise
when you believe that a painting has not succeeded as you had planned.
The
important thing is always to reach the goal.
FG: What's your
inspiration?
Francesco: My painting is based on a continuous
search for emotions, situations and moments during the journey of my life.
FG: You were born in
Carini, Italy but you currently live and work near Zurich. How has this move
informed your practice?
Francesco: Moving from Sicily to Switzerland was
mainly important for the change of style.
From landscape, still life, to
abstract. I was looking for sensations without having the need to see things in
a photographic way as I was used to.
With time I followed my instinct and let
myself be carried away by the colors and shapes
FG: What wouldn’t you do
without?
Francesco: Of course my painting, as well as
travel. But I always put my family first.
Without that, the rest would be
worthless.
